Vain the Sword: Character Generators

   

     


    For Vain the Sword (GLoGhack by Phlox, check it out here), there are a multitude of different races of people that one can be! I have (with the help of Spwack and their wonderful list to HTML generator, which you can visit here) created basic generators for every race in the setting, with specific probabilities according to the given race. Below are generators!

I intend these generators to be character/look generators rather than number-crunching ones; hopefully they’re useful jumping-off points for a more solid character concept, or just for random NPCs that a PC might come across.

Eulogy

Eulogy take the form of snake-like humanoids with long tails and scales. They vary widely in how “snake-shaped” versus “human-shaped” they are. A small number possess human-like legs, and are considered deformed by their peers.

Golems

Golems are created for a variety of reasons, in a variety of ways. Many live as former soldiers and servants, and come to regard the intention behind their creation as being not much different from the intention behind the creation of other folk.

Gnolls

A species of hyena-esque beastmen, gnolls are prized in many utopian and dystopian societies for their hierarchical adroitness. They are prone to pica, identifying with animals, social anxiety, nationalism, courage, and mental endurance.

Kaf-Tsadhi

These are the first of all folk, from whom humans are descended. They are descended themselves from foxes, and have vulpine features. They traditionally speak antediluvian, the first of all tongues.


Orcs

The orcs of the isolated continent of Nuf wait for a ship to stray too close, so they may learn the secret of sailing and invade the world. You are presumably a different kind of orc, performing the proper rituals to avoid the attention of a hateful god.

Humans

Humans, as you know them, in a bronze-age setting.

Hobbits/Halflings

It was hobbits who first used currency and carts. Many hobbits tend to assimilate into their dominant culture, but maintain a private passion for their ways and gods. It is common for hobbits to let others make what they will of them.

Locusts

Like overgrown grasshoppers, a locust is born on soft, clear wings. These folk typically hibernate seven years out of eight, but some sacrifice their lifespan and sanity to stay awake for longer. They are said to have old souls, and to go senile quickly.

Talking Animals

Precisely as it sounds: you are an animal who, through magic, meditation, or expanding your intelligence far beyond the norm for your kin, has developed the ability to speak, as well as a soul of your very own. Some Talking Animals were even other races before some variety of magic changed their body.
Depending on your particular animal species, you might have a natural weapon, ability, or mobility. Despite this, your form might prevent you from normal actions like holding an item or climbing a ladder. For lo, you have the form of a simple animal, and may not speak mortal languages very fluently.

Elves

Elves are the only folk who evolved naturally, rather than being created by a god or gods. This leaves them with dozens of vestigial organs, as well as webbed digits and a total lack of moral instinct. Tumors are a common affliction among this long-lived race, and many turn to demonic bargains to stave off illness. While elves have no instinct for kindness or selflessness, they can still value these things for intellectual reasons.

Gnomes/Fey

Gnomes represent a wide array of fey and fey-like creatures, their perspective shaped by enduring desires, rules, and shtick. They seldom tire of their endless interests and are often endlessly fasinated by tricks and deceit, and appreciate ugliness in a way that most other species have a difficult time fathoming.

Pre-Skeleton

Preskeletons are just what they sound like: a person who, when they die, will have a skeleton hatch from their corpse. This skeleton is its own person and likely knows nothing of its former host. In the meantime though, they're still a member of their race, albeit one who will eventually be a new person when their soul moves on.
Preskeletons often look like gaunt members of another folk, but some look indistinguishable from a “normal” person. Others show obvious signs of ripening in anticipation of death. They frequently develop alien hand syndrome, bone-itis, and bone deformities. Preskeletons are often accepted by living skeletons as one of their own, and can even learn with the fabled osteo-martial artist masters.

Serset

Serset are about six inches long, slug-like and a muddy green or pale yellow colour. They inhabit a host by crawling through their ear canal and flattening themselves over the host's brain to take full control of their faculties. This means that they usually experience extensive “bleed” with their hosts, acquiring some of their quirks. Amid lawful serset society, most of their hosts are the comatose or criminal rejects of other folk.
A serset cannot inhabit beings that are too small, or without a brain and/or ears in which to enter the host, so they cannot attach to golems or other sersets, and some variety of Fey or Talking Animals may also be uninhabitable to them. Use your best judgement.

Legamon: Mystery Dungeon - Problem Solving in a Modern World

      (see bottom of post for Legamon: Mystery Dungeon Character Creation)      It occurred to me during the height of the Legamon hype on Phlox’s GLoG server that it would (could, should ) be fun to play a Legamon variety of the Mystery Dungeon series.     It then occurred to me that I would probably have to create it (alas, I could not find it in myself to try to press-gang Phlox into doing so, especially since he’s never played a Mystery Dungeon game, I believe), if I ever wanted to play it.      And so here we are, about a week and a half into my process of building out this game, which has me experiencing the usual swings between a manic state of “I can create whatever I want, however I want, and do it exactly how I PREFER” productivity and the more depressing “I bit off more than I could chew in a confusing way, hm?” side.
